Not So Happy Ending, Or Is It?

There’s a lot going on in pop culture these days, and I couldn’t decide what to write about this week. I decided that I’d already talked enough about Big Hero 6 & Too Many Cooks and I’m saving Serial later for an upcoming post on podcasts. So, I want to tell you about two tv shows I’m enjoying at the moment.
I watch way too much TV. I watch so much tv that I can’t complete or stick to everything. It’s rare that I stick to something and watch every single episode, especially if it’s something currently on TV. Now, one of my favorite shows of all time was Happy Endings, which was cancelled waaaay too soon. For a giant comedy nerd like myself, that show was heaven. I was heartbroken when it ended. Great cast, constant cameos by awesome comedians, hilarious jokes…it was an irreverent Friends clone that worked. Now, two new shows have come along that might just fill the gap in my heart left by HE.

The first is Benched. Benched premiered on the USA Network a couple of weeks ago. It is a courtroom comedy starring Eliza Coupe, formerly of Happy Endings (see a theme here?). She is a corporate attorney who loses her job after a crazy (and hilarious) breakdown and is forced to work in the office of the public defender. Her adjustment to this lowbrow society is the basic premise to the show, and it is totally a flawed one, but she is funny enough to keep my attention. Her supporting cast is a who’s who of former cast members of forgotten shows, like Better Off Ted and the Office. But, the best supporting character of all is Maria Bamford as her wacky co-worker. I worship at the altar of Queen Maria, and I will watch her in ANYTHING. This might not be the best comedy on tv right now, but it’s got promise. I’ll stick with it. I give it 3 out of 5 gavels.

Now, the second show has more potential as a heart-hole-filler. Marry Me is on NBC and is by the creators of Happy Endings. (YAY!) It shares a lot of similarities- both are set in Chicago, both feature cameos by tons of comedians, and both star Casey Wilson. I loved Casey in her short stint on SNL and have been a fan ever since. When I saw that she was starring in this with Ken Marino, I was already a fan before the show even started. And, I was right. It is a hilarious show about a couple that recently became engaged, but the supporting cast adds so much fun and flair to a typical premise. I don’t like it as much as Happy Endings, but it is a close second. I look forward to the future episodes. I give it 8 out of 9 Greetings Feline notebooks.

Starring Johnny Snowpiercer

Yesterday, I watched a little film called Snowpiercer. This is the story of Johnny Snowpiercer, a man trying to bring….no, it’s not. But it didn’t stop me from making that joke a zillion times.
In the future, a chemical froze the whole world. The only inhabitants left are ones that boarded a giant train, built by Mr. Wilbur, an eccentric train lover that ended up saving the world. Kinda.
Now, in this train society (trainciety?), you have fancy people at the front of the train who eat steak, go to school, knit, swim, etc. At the back, you have people treated like crap. They have to eat things that look like blocks of brown jello and are used & beaten. This is where our story starts. Chris Evans, looking hot & bearded, along with others, decide they’re going to take over and rush the front. What happens is two hours of violence & action that looks like a video game, except way better because you don’t have to actually do anything but watch.
I’m not going to give away much, but I am going to say that it had a great cast, fantastic action sequences, Chris Evans with a beard, Tilda Swinton making me love her more, and an ending that I hated. Even so, I enjoyed it.
I give it 14.5 out of 17 frozen limbs.
(Snowpiercer is streaming on Netflix)

The Candy Man caaaaaaaan…..

Okay, for my first real post, I want to talk about my newest musical obsession of the past couple of days. It’s not Taylor/1989, even though I love it, and it’s not the Live Phish update that I’m on my free trial of and debating the subscription fee. It is Primus and the Chocolate Factory. I’ve always enjoyed the Primus and Les Claypool’s weirdness. When I heard about this, I was honestly a little scared because I’ve seen what the Flaming Lips have done with Wizard of Oz and Dark Side of the Moon. At the suggestion of a friend (who happened to catch the live show a few nights ago and was blown away), I decided to give it a spin.

And I haven’t stopped in two days. It’s that good.

Basically, this album is a reimagining of the soundtrack to Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. When they perform it live, they make a whole stage production of it and play it alongside the actual movie. (!!!!) It is twisted and creepy and perfect listening for this time of year. Not only do I love this album, it has me looking back into their older stuff for a refresher course.

You can tell that I like it, but I want to make sure you know. I like rating systems when I read reviews, so I decided to have my own. I give Primus & the Chocolate Factory 3 out of 4 old people sharing one bed. I would give it all 4, but it makes me sad that I might never have the chance to see it live.

Until next time…

The beginning…

Okay, giving this blogging thing a shot. Again. I’m making myself post at least twice a week. This blog is going to be where I can throw out my views on music, movies, tv, podcasts, and perhaps more things from time to time. I tend to clog my social media feeds with my nonsense, so I decided to find a place to park all of it.

So, read. Comment. Pass along to your friends. I’m not convinced I like how it looks yet, so it might undergo some cosmetic changes for the first couple of weeks until I’m happy. I am happy with the name, however. Here’s the background – when I get home each day, I announce, “I’m going to change into not these clothes.” It started as a funny thing I would say to make my husband laugh, until it became one of those things I just said, even when he stopped laughing. He suggested the name, stating that it’s one of the “Christa-isms” that I say a lot that is actually clean enough to be published on the internet.

If you made it this far, thanks for reading. I will post my first real post over the weekend. Maybe.
